Serious athletes have been using remote online coaching for quite some time.
In recent years, especially post-pandemic, online coaching is gaining traction with a broad array of everyday gym-goers and fitness enthusiasts.
Whether or not you should hire an online coach depends upon a variety of factors.
I hope to address some of these factors in this summary.
Who Should Use an Online Coach?
Although remote coaching can work for anyone from beginner to advanced, it does give slight favor to those who have some prior gym or exercise experience.
Remote coaching is highly effective and particularly well suited for athletes and average gym-goers that are serious about achieving specific goals.
In contrast, those with no experience whatsoever who do not have the first clue as to how to perform basic exercises or use gym equipment safely will not fare quite as well with a remote online trainer.
A few more reasons to use an online coach are:
ü If you have a specific goal
ü If you are stuck and not making any progress
ü If you are looking for accountability
Remote Coach vs. Personal Trainer
How do remote online coaches differ from in-person trainers?
One difference is cost, and it’s a big one.
A single 30-to-60 minute session with an in-person trainer can run from $50 to $100 or more depending on your location.
In contrast, remote online fitness coaching can run between $100 and $200 per month.
As such, someone using an in-person trainer three times per week will spend anywhere from $600 to $1200 per month, and they will likely receive ZERO in the way of nutritional guidance.
The basic math puts online coaching anywhere from 3X to 10X less costly than in-person training!
We should all know by now that diet accounts for up to 80% success in reaching fitness goals.
The vast majority of in-person trainers do not address diet and nutrition with their clients at all.
With in-person training, you work with your trainer only during the 30-60 minutes that you scheduled.
Beyond the scheduled time spent with your in-person trainer, you are on your own.
With an online coach, you have someone readily available anytime you have questions. Most provide scheduled weekly check-ins as well.
Remote coaches like me assist you not only in the creation of but also in the tracking and monitoring of your training sessions and nutritional targets as well.
What Should You Look for in an Online Fitness Coach?
Primarily you should seek compatibility with your online coach.
Do you prefer a coaching style that is supportive and understanding, tough and demanding or a combination of both?
It is essential to know if you and your prospective coach will be a good fit for working together.
Does the coach have a level of expertise that focuses on the disciplines most important to you?
If you are a powerlifter and the coach you are looking at focuses exclusively on bodybuilding and weight loss, then chances are you should look for a coach more aligned with your interests and needs.
A few more things to look for in an online coach are:
ü Custom training and diet programs – NO generic programs or templates for mass consumption.
ü Scheduled correspondence, open communication, and regular progress reviews
ü Experience, Excellent Organizational Skills, Trustworthiness, Reliability, and Knowledge
