Don’t just stand there, do something! That was the first title that came to mind when thinking about how I might introduce the topic of training equipment, working out, and the venues available to facilitate such.
What I am referring to here is taking action, any action – whatever it may be, whether it is to get started or to keep going.
Lockdowns Looming
Though many gyms have reopened after prolonged closure during the initial lockdown, some have begun to close again. They are doing so amid a perceived second wave that the media appears compelled to promote.
Unfortunately, at the rate we’re going, future lockdowns appear likely.
As such, it would be prudent to prepare for such events and be ready in advance to adjust your training plans accordingly.
At Home
Though we can easily design and deploy bodyweight-only workouts to get by, it is far more desirable to have some home equipment with which to work.
When the first lockdown hit back in March, I was fortunate to have had a small home gym already set up.
It’s not much, but it’s enough to get the job done.
Here are my seven essential pieces of home equipment.
Coach Joe’s Spartan Seven
ü One Pair of Selectable Dumbbells, which range from 10 – 50 lbs. each
ü Adjustable bench
ü Doorway threshold Chin Up Bar
ü Exercise ball
ü 12-lb medicine ball
ü Inexpensive Stationary Bike
ü Yoga Mat
Though this is nothing compared to a full-on gym, it’s enough for me to run a six-day push-pull-leg split with some compound movements.
In contrast to the blasphemy of doing nothing at all, designing and adhering to a comprehensive body-weight only routine is the bare minimum one should consider.
To keep forward progress on point, we should also have a few additional tools, gadgets, and apps at the ready.

In closing, the bottom line is not to let anything get in your way. Do whatever it takes to keep yourself on a forward path. You’re worth it!
Until next time,
-Coach Joe
